• 1.Recoleta Cemetery — A city of the dead like no other — a maze of grand marble mausoleums, statues and crypts of Argentina's great and powerful, including Eva Perón, packed along little 'streets'. Astonishing, atmospheric and free; wander the avenues, find Evita's tomb, and admire the extravagant funerary architecture. The must-see of Recoleta.
• 10.El Ateneo Grand Splendid — Regularly voted the world's most beautiful bookshop — a grand 1919 theatre in Recoleta, its books shelved in the ornate boxes and stalls, the painted ceiling and red-velvet curtains intact, and a café on the old stage. Free to wander and browse; grab a coffee where the footlights once burned, under the frescoes.
• 13.MALBA & the museums — Buenos Aires is packed with superb, often free museums — the standout is MALBA, a sleek gallery of 20th-century Latin American art (Frida Kahlo, Botero, Argentine masters), with the grand National Museum of Fine Arts nearby. A cultured couple of hours; MALBA's collection is a brilliant primer on the art of the continent.
