Things to do — all 15

  1. Stanley Park & the seawall

A magnificent 400-hectare forested park on a peninsula at the city's edge, ringed by a 9-km seawall path with jaw-dropping views of the mountains, sea and skyline — plus totem poles, beaches, a lighthouse and giant cedars. Rent a bike and cycle the loop; the single best thing to do in Vancouver, and it's free.

Free; bike hire ~C$10/hrWest End & Stanley Park
  2. Capilano Suspension Bridge

A thrilling 140-metre suspension bridge swaying 70 metres above a rainforest canyon and river on the North Shore, with a cliffwalk and treetop walkways through the giant firs. Touristy but genuinely exhilarating and beautiful; a free shuttle runs from downtown, and it's magical lit up at Christmas. (The free Lynn Canyon bridge is a cheaper alternative.)

    ~C$66West End & Stanley Park
  3. Granville Island

A peninsula under the bridge turned into a wonderful public market and arts hub — a bustling food market of produce, seafood, bakeries and stalls, plus craft studios, a brewery and buskers, reached by little rainbow aquabus ferries. Come hungry, graze the market, and hop the ferry across; a Vancouver institution.

    Free; ferry ~C$4Kitsilano
  4. Grouse Mountain

The North Shore mountain looming over the city — ride the gondola (or hike the brutal 'Grouse Grind' trail) to the top for a sweeping view over Vancouver, the sea and the islands, with grizzly bears, lumberjack shows and ziplines in summer and skiing in winter. A spectacular half-day, and the view is unbeatable on a clear day.

Gondola ~C$75West End & Stanley Park
  5. Gastown & the steam clock

The city's birthplace — cobbled streets of Victorian warehouses now full of design shops, galleries and some of Vancouver's best restaurants and bars, and the famous (if faintly kitsch) steam-powered clock that whistles on the quarter-hour. Wander the historic lanes, and it's the heart of the city's cool dining and drinking scene.

    FreeGastown & Chinatown
  6. Kitsilano Beach

Vancouver's favourite beach, across the water on the west side — a wide sandy strand with a huge heated saltwater pool, a backdrop of downtown towers and the North Shore mountains, and one of the best sunset spots in the city. Swim, sunbathe, play volleyball, and stay for the sunset; the essence of laid-back Vancouver summer.

    FreeKitsilano
  7. English Bay & the seawall

The West End's beach and the liveliest stretch of the seawall — a curve of sand where the city gathers for sunset over the water and the anchored ships, with cafés, the 'A-maze-ing Laughter' bronze statues, and the fireworks launched here each summer. Stroll or cycle the seawall, and settle on the beach for the sundown show.

    FreeWest End & Stanley Park
  8. Chinatown & the classical garden

One of the largest and oldest Chinatowns in North America — heritage storefronts, herbalists and bakeries, and the serene Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, the first full-scale Ming-style scholar's garden built outside China, a walled oasis of ponds and pavilions. Atmospheric and reviving; the garden is a peaceful gem.

  9. The Museum of Anthropology

A superb museum out at UBC, in a striking glass-and-concrete building on the cliffs — home to a world-class collection of Northwest Coast First Nations art, its Great Hall filled with towering totem poles and canoes against a backdrop of sea and sky. Essential for understanding the region's Indigenous cultures; beautiful and moving.

    ~C$18Kitsilano
  10. Canada Place & the waterfront

The white sail-roofed convention centre and cruise terminal jutting into the harbour — a landmark with a waterfront promenade, sweeping views to the North Shore mountains and floatplanes taking off, plus the FlyOver Canada ride. Stroll the piers, watch the seaplanes and ships, and take in the harbour heart of the city.

    Free; FlyOver ~C$35Downtown
  11. Dim sum & the food scene

Vancouver has some of the best Asian food outside Asia — a dim sum brunch of dumplings and buns, a bowl of ramen or pho, sushi, and superb Cantonese seafood, thanks to a huge Chinese community (Richmond, just south, is a food destination in itself). Do a leisurely weekend dim sum; the city eats brilliantly and diversely.

    ~C$25–40 dim sumDowntown
  12. Yaletown & False Creek

The old rail-yard district reborn — brick warehouses turned into loft restaurants, patios and cocktail bars along the marina of False Creek, with the little aquabus ferries buzzing across to Granville Island and the seawall running past. A lovely spot to stroll, dine on a waterside patio and hop a tiny ferry across the creek.

  13. Gastown's bars & restaurants

Gastown is the heart of Vancouver's cool nightlife — craft-cocktail bars, breweries and acclaimed restaurants tucked into the brick warehouses and cobbled lanes, from speakeasies to buzzing gastropubs. The best evening out in the city; bar-hop the historic streets, and it's especially atmospheric under the old lampposts.

    ~C$12–18 a cocktailGastown & Chinatown
  14. Lynn Canyon & the North Shore

A gorgeous, free rainforest park on the North Shore — a free suspension bridge over a dramatic gorge, waterfalls, swimming holes and forest trails among giant firs. A cheaper, wilder, less-crowded alternative to Capilano; combine it with the wider North Shore's superb hiking and mountain-biking a short drive from downtown.

    FreeWest End & Stanley Park
  15. Pacific seafood

The cold Pacific delivers superb seafood — wild salmon, spot prawns, Dungeness crab and oysters — served everywhere from Granville Island stalls to fine-dining rooms with a harbour view. Try a salmon dinner, or the local sustainable 'Ocean Wise' spots; and don't miss a Japadog (a Japanese-topped hot dog), a quirky Vancouver street-food classic.

Worth knowing: Vancouver is wedged between the sea and the mountains, and it's an outdoors city — the 28-km seawall (the world's longest uninterrupted waterfront path) rings it, best by bike. The North Shore mountains (Grouse, Capilano, Lynn Canyon) are a short drive or SeaBus away; Whistler is two hours up the stunning Sea-to-Sky Highway. It rains a lot outside summer.

Vancouver is one of the world's most beautiful and liveable cities — a compact, glass-towered downtown wedged between the sparkling Pacific and the snow-capped Coast Mountains, ringed by beaches, a giant forested park and a seawall made for cycling. Outdoorsy and easygoing, wonderfully multicultural (with some of the best Asian food outside Asia), it's a place where you can ski in the morning and sail in the afternoon, and where nature is never more than minutes away. Modern, green and ringed by staggering scenery — if often under a Pacific drizzle.
