Croatia is the Adriatic at its most cinematic — a long ribbon of coast strung with medieval walled towns, pine-covered islands and impossibly clear water, backed by mountains and national parks of waterfalls. Dubrovnik is the jewel, a perfect walled city on the sea, but the whole coast rewards a boat and a little time. Warm, welcoming and made for summer, with a café culture and a seafood-and-wine table that ranks with anywhere on the Mediterranean.
What things cost: Croatia is mid-range and has crept up since it joined the euro and the crowds discovered it — the Dalmatian coast in July and August is priced like Italy, while spring, autumn and the inland towns stay gentle. Dubrovnik's old town is the most expensive corner in the country. When a zone below says 'low', that means low for Croatia.
