The everyday residential streets just east of the palace, by the green market, the bus station and the ferry port — no great charm, but handy, well-connected and the best value in the city, a flat few minutes' walk to the old town. The practical base, especially if you're island-hopping.

- 14.The Green Market (Pazar) — The open-air market pressed against the eastern palace wall — a colourful, chaotic sprawl of fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese, olive oil and local honey where Split does its shopping. Come in the morning for the buzz, the seasonal produce and a cheap, authentic slice of everyday Dalmatian life.
- 16.Krka Waterfalls — A national park of tumbling turquoise falls an hour inland — boardwalks over the cascades and (some years) a swim below them. Plitvice's easier little sibling.
- 17.Trogir — A tiny walled town on its own islet just up the coast — a Romanesque cathedral, marble streets and a waterfront of yachts. A perfect UNESCO half-day.
- 19.Salona — The ruined Roman capital of Dalmatia on the edge of town — an amphitheatre and basilicas among the cypresses, where Diocletian was born. Ancient, green and quiet.
