Denmark

Design, bikes, and the art of being comfortable.

expensiveDanish krone (kr)

Denmark is small, flat, and quietly one of the best-run places on earth — a country that invented hygge and built a capital to match, all bicycles, clean design and harbour swimming. Copenhagen is the reason most people come: a low, liveable, colour-washed city of canals and new Nordic food, where the royal palace, the world's best restaurants and a hippie commune all sit within a bike ride. Expensive, effortless and deeply civilised, best in the long light of summer.

What things cost: Denmark is genuinely expensive — a beer, a coffee, a night's stay all land higher than almost anywhere in Europe, the trade-off for some of the world's highest wages and quality of life. You get a spotless, walkable, cycle-friendly city for it. When a zone below says 'low', it means low for Copenhagen, which is still not cheap.

Tivoli at Christmas

Tivoli Gardens transforms into a glittering Christmas market of a thousand lights, fir trees, mulled gløgg and roasting almonds, the old rides running in the frost. The most magical thing to do in the city in winter; wrap up and go after dark.
