Agii Apostoli & the coast west

12 min · 5 km from the centre

The greener resort strip west of town, where sheltered sandy coves and bigger beach hotels line the coast towards Platanias. No old-town character, but proper beach days, more space and better value for families, with the harbour a short bus or drive away. Where to stay for a sun-and-sea holiday with Chania on the side.

  • 10.Agii Apostoli beaches — A string of small, sheltered sandy coves between low headlands just west of town — calm, shallow and family-friendly, backed by pines and tavernas. The easiest 'proper' beach day from Chania without a big drive: shallow turquoise water, sunbeds and shade, and the old town a short bus ride back.
  • 14.Botanical Park of Crete — A lush, terraced park in the foothills south of town, where paths wind down through fruit orchards, tropical plants and herb gardens to a lake, with a farm-to-table taverna serving its own produce at the bottom. A green, shady break from beaches and stone, and a lovely lunch; best combined with a drive into the hills.
  • 15.Archaeological Museum — Chania's modern archaeological museum gathers the finds of ancient Kydonia — Minoan pottery and clay tablets, Roman mosaics and jewellery — telling the deep story of the city that has sat on this spot for four thousand years. A cool, well-laid-out hour that gives the pretty old town its ancient backbone.
  • 16.The Samaria Gorge — Europe's longest gorge — a 16km trek down through a dramatic canyon from the mountains to the Libyan Sea, ending at a village you leave by boat. Crete's great day hike.
  • 17.Balos Lagoon — A dreamlike lagoon of pink-tinged sand and impossibly shallow turquoise water at Crete's wild north-western tip — reached by a rough drive or a boat. Worth every bump.
  • 18.Elafonisi beach — A shallow, pink-sand lagoon on the south-west coast that you can wade across to a little island — warm, clear and stunning. Go early or late; midday it's mobbed.
  • 20.Falassarna beach — A long, wide beach of golden sand on the west coast, famous for its sunsets over the sea. Big enough to never feel full, with a Roman ruin at one end. Stay for the sundown.
