• 1.Chora & Matoyianni Street — The main town is a dazzling white labyrinth built to confuse pirates — bougainvillea-draped lanes, blue-domed chapels, and Matoyianni's designer shops and bars. Deliberately get lost; it's the essence of Mykonos.
• 2.The Windmills (Kato Mili) — A row of round, thatch-capped 16th-century windmills on the hill above town, the postcard symbol of Mykonos. Come at sunset when they glow gold against the sea; free, and the view over Little Venice is unbeatable.
• 3.Little Venice — A row of old sea-captains' houses with wooden balconies hanging right over the water, now cocktail bars where the waves splash the tables. The place for a sundowner; touristy and pricey, but pure Mykonos romance.
• 6.Panagia Paraportiani — A dazzling white cluster of five chapels merged into one sculptural, whitewashed form by the sea — one of Greece's most photographed churches. Best in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon.
• 8.Sunset drinks in Little Venice — Mykonos does sunset like nowhere else — a cocktail at a waterside bar below the windmills as the sky turns and the sea laps the terrace. The nightly ritual; arrive early for a front-row table.
• 10.Armenistis Lighthouse — A 19th-century lighthouse on the island's northern tip, looking across the strait to Tinos — a windswept, uncrowded spot with a glorious sunset view. Bring a car or ATV; a wild counterpoint to the beach clubs.
• 13.Aegean Maritime Museum — A small, charming museum in a captain's house in town, tracing the Aegean's seafaring history with models, maps and a working lighthouse lantern in its garden. A cool, cultured break from the sun.
• 14.A Mykonian taverna feast — Beyond the beach clubs, seek out a family taverna for the island's own flavours — kopanisti (spicy cheese), louza cured pork, fresh grilled fish and tomato fritters, with a carafe of local wine. The tastier, cheaper side of Mykonos.
