The real spots and the timing — from locals, not guidebooks. The stuff a top-10 list will never give you.

BarLocal tip

Ruin bars, early

📍 Jewish Quarter

The 'romkocsma' ruin bars in crumbling courtyards (Szimpla Kert is the original) are the local invention. Go on a weeknight or before 10pm to beat the stag parties, and try a 'fröccs' (wine spritzer).

RitualLocal tip

Thermal baths like a local

📍 Széchenyi & Rudas

The baths are a daily ritual, not just a spa day. Locals play chess in the steaming outdoor pools at Széchenyi; the old Turkish Rudas has a rooftop tub over the Danube. Bring flip-flops and a cap.

FoodLocal tip

Market-hall lángos

📍 Great Market Hall / Hunyadi tér

Upstairs at the Great Market Hall, or better a neighbourhood market, locals eat 'lángos' — deep-fried dough with sour cream and cheese. Greasy, huge, and the perfect hangover cure.

Things to do — all 20

  1. The Hungarian Parliament

The vast neo-Gothic Parliament on the Danube, all spires and a red dome, is the image of the city — floodlit gold at night and dazzling from the Buda side. Tour the crown jewels and the grand staircase inside, or just walk the embankment at dusk.

    €12 tour, book aheadDistrict V — Belváros
  2. Fisherman's Bastion & Matthias Church

The fairy-tale white turrets and terraces on Castle Hill, framing the best view in the city across to Parliament, beside the tiled roof of Matthias Church. Free to wander (the upper terrace charges a little); magical at sunrise before the crowds.

Lower free; upper €4The Castle District (Buda)
  3. Széchenyi Thermal Baths

The grand yellow palace of a bathhouse in the City Park — steaming outdoor pools where locals play chess in the water, dozens of indoor thermal rooms, and pure magic when it's snowing. The quintessential Budapest experience; bring flip-flops.

    €22–28 a dayDistrict VI — Andrássy
  4. Buda Castle & the hill

The great royal palace crowning Castle Hill, now home to the National Gallery and museums, ringed by ramparts with sweeping views. Ride the old funicular up from the Chain Bridge, then wander the cobbled lanes of the district around it.

Grounds free; museums varyThe Castle District (Buda)
  5. The Chain Bridge & the Danube

The stately stone lions and iron chains of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge — the first permanent span across the Danube here, and still the city's heart. Walk it at night with Parliament and the castle lit up on either bank; unbeatable.

    FreeDistrict V — Belváros
  6. St Stephen's Basilica

The city's grandest church, its dome the exact height of Parliament by decree, holding the mummified right hand of Hungary's first king. Climb (or lift) to the dome walkway for a 360° view over the rooftops, and catch an organ concert if you can.

Church small donation; dome €6District V — Belváros
  7. The ruin bars

Budapest's genius idea — bars thrown up in derelict courtyards and tenements, packed with mismatched furniture, fairy lights and a whole city out drinking cheap. Szimpla Kert started it; the whole Jewish quarter is full of them now. The night out.

    €2–4 a drinkDistrict VII — Jewish Quarter
  8. Dohány Street Synagogue

The largest synagogue in Europe, a striking Moorish-revival building with a memorial garden and a moving Holocaust museum. The heart of the old Jewish quarter, and essential for understanding the district around it.

    €15District VII — Jewish Quarter
  9. Andrássy Avenue & the Opera

The grand tree-lined boulevard, a UNESCO site, running from the centre to Heroes' Square — lined with mansions and cafés, and the lavish Hungarian State Opera House. Ride the little yellow M1, the oldest metro on the continent, beneath it.

Free; opera tour €12District VI — Andrássy
  10. Heroes' Square & City Park

The vast ceremonial square at the top of Andrássy, colonnades wrapped around the chieftains who founded Hungary — opening onto the City Park, its castle, boating lake and the Széchenyi baths. Grand history and green space in one.

    FreeDistrict VI — Andrássy
  11. The Great Market Hall

The huge, colourful covered market at the end of the shopping street — paprika, salami and Tokaji wine downstairs, and stalls of lángos (fried dough with sour cream and cheese) up top. The best spot to eat and shop like a local.

    €3–8 a biteDistrict V — Belváros
  12. Gellért Hill & the Citadella

The rocky hill on the Buda side, topped by the Liberty Statue and a citadel, with the single best panorama over the whole city and its bridges. Walk up through the woods (or take a bus), and finish at the Art Nouveau Gellért Baths at its foot.

    FreeThe Castle District (Buda)
  13. A Danube evening cruise

The city's showpiece is its riverfront, and it's at its best from the water after dark, when Parliament, the castle and the bridges are floodlit gold. An hour on an evening boat, drink in hand, is the cheapest bit of magic in Budapest.

    €15–25District V — Belváros
  14. Goulash & Hungarian classics

Hearty and paprika-rich — a real bowl of gulyás (a soup, not a stew), chicken paprikás, chimney cake, and lángos from a market stall. Wash it down with a glass of Tokaji or a shot of pálinka; cheap, filling, and the taste of the place.

    €8–14 a plateDistrict VII — Jewish Quarter
  15. Margaret Island

The long green island in the middle of the Danube — no cars, just parkland, a musical fountain, medieval ruins, a running track and a summer lido. Rent a bike or a pedal-cart and escape the city without leaving it. Locals' favourite Sunday.

    FreeÚjlipótváros
  16. Gellért Baths

The most beautiful of the thermal baths — an Art Nouveau palace of columns, mosaics and steaming water. Splurge on this one over the busier Széchenyi.

    €25The Castle District (Buda)
  17. Shoes on the Danube

Sixty pairs of iron shoes on the embankment, a quiet memorial to those shot into the river. A small, gutting thing to stand in front of by the Parliament.

    FreeDistrict V — Belváros
  18. Vajdahunyad Castle

A romantic fantasy castle in the City Park, cobbled together from a dozen Hungarian styles for a fair and never taken down. Free to wander, magical in snow.

    FreeDistrict VI — Andrássy
  19. Memento Park

A field on the edge of town where the toppled communist statues went to retire — Lenins and marching workers, larger than life. Weird, and unforgettable.

    CheapÚjlipótváros
  20. New York Café

Billed as the world's most beautiful café, and it's not wrong — gilt, frescoes and chandeliers dripping over your coffee. Overpriced, over the top, worth it once.

Worth knowing: No beach, but the Danube and the thermal baths are the water here — and there's a proper river beach and lidos on Margaret Island in summer. Buda is the hilly, quiet side; Pest is the flat, lively one.

Budapest is two cities in one — hilly, historic Buda and flat, buzzing Pest — split by the Danube and stitched together by grand bridges. It's one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe and among the best value, a place where you can soak in a century-old thermal bath, eat goulash under Art Nouveau ceilings, and drink till dawn in a crumbling 'ruin bar', all in a day. Imperial grandeur with a rough, fun edge.
