  • 1.The Taj MahalThe most beautiful building on earth and the reason to come — the Taj Mahal, a shimmering white-marble mausoleum built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife, perfectly symmetrical, inlaid with precious stones, and set behind reflecting pools and gardens. Its serene, ethereal beauty (especially at sunrise, when the marble glows pink then gold and the crowds are thinnest) is genuinely breathtaking and lives up to every expectation. Go at dawn for the magic and the light; it's one of humanity's supreme achievements. Utterly unmissable and unforgettable. A wonder of the world.
  • 4.The 'Baby Taj' (Itmad-ud-Daulah)Often called the 'Baby Taj', the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah is an exquisite jewel that predates and is said to have inspired the great Taj Mahal — a smaller but intricately beautiful white-marble mausoleum on the Yamuna's east bank, covered in delicate pietra dura inlay and lattice screens, set in a lovely garden. Far quieter than the Taj, it's a serene, gorgeous and rewarding visit that shows the Mughal marble-inlay craft at its finest. Go for the exquisite detail and the peace; it's a lovely, underrated gem. A beautiful, tranquil highlight. Delicate and lovely.
  • 5.Mehtab Bagh (sunset Taj view)The most beautiful place to watch the Taj Mahal at sunset — Mehtab Bagh, a Mughal garden directly across the Yamuna river from the Taj, offering an unobstructed, postcard-perfect view of the monument glowing golden and then pink as the sun sets, reflected (when the river is high) in the water. Far calmer than the Taj itself, it's a serene, romantic spot for that classic photograph and a peaceful end to the day. Go at sunset for the magical light on the marble; it's a lovely, tranquil alternative viewpoint. A beautiful, essential highlight. Gorgeous at golden hour.
