Ireland

Rain, warmth, and the best conversation you'll have all year.

expensiveEuro ()

Ireland runs on talk, music and weather — a small green island where a wet afternoon is solved by the nearest pub, a pint of stout and a stranger who becomes a friend. Dublin, the compact Georgian capital on the Liffey, is the front door: literary, boozy and genuinely friendly, with a pub on every corner and the whole wild Atlantic country an easy drive beyond. Come for the craic and the writers, not the sunshine, and you'll leave already planning the trip back.

What things cost: Ireland, and Dublin especially, is expensive — a pint in Temple Bar and a night's sleep both cost more than you'd expect, driven by a chronic shortage of rooms. It buys you warmth and atmosphere rather than luxury. Book early, drink away from the tourist strip, and know that when a zone below says 'low', that still means dear by European standards.

Sometimes the event picks the city for you.

24 Sep – 11 Oct

Dublin Theatre Festival

The oldest theatre festival in Europe turns the whole city into a stage for a fortnight — new Irish plays, international companies and fringe shows across the Abbey, the Gate and a dozen smaller venues. Autumn is Dublin's cultural high season.

TradFest

Five days of the best Irish and folk music in extraordinary settings — gigs in the cathedrals, Dublin Castle and the historic pubs of Temple Bar. The city's biggest trad festival, and a warm, atmospheric reason to brave the depths of winter.

St Patrick's Festival

The national holiday turned into a four-day citywide party, climaxing in the giant parade of floats, marching bands and pageantry down O'Connell Street on the 17th, with the whole city in green. Book beds months ahead; this is Dublin's biggest weekend.

Bloomsday

The day James Joyce's Ulysses takes place, marked by Dubliners in Edwardian dress retracing Leopold Bloom's wanderings — readings, kidney breakfasts, and pub crawls across the city. A gloriously nerdy, only-in-Dublin celebration of the written word.
