• 2.The Amalfi Coast road — One of the world's great drives (and bus rides) — the SS163 corniche clings to the cliffs, curling past every pastel town with the sea shimmering far below and a new postcard round every bend. Let the local SITA bus or a driver take the wheel (the road is narrow and nerve-shredding); the journey itself is a highlight.
• 3.Amalfi Cathedral — The striped Arab-Norman cathedral of Sant'Andrea rises above Amalfi's piazza up a grand flight of steps, with a golden mosaic facade, a serene 'Cloister of Paradise' and a crypt of relics. The dramatic heart of the old town; climb the steps for the view back over the square, and step into the cool cloister.
• 8.The Emerald Grotto — A sea cave near Conca dei Marini where light filtering through the water turns the whole cavern a glowing emerald green, explored by little rowing boat. Touristy and brief, but genuinely lovely, and an easy stop on the coast road or by boat; the Amalfi Coast's answer to Capri's Blue Grotto, without the queues.
• 11.Atrani — Tucked around the headland from Amalfi, tiny Atrani is the coast's most unspoilt corner — a knot of white houses and vaulted lanes around a little piazza and a pocket beach, almost untouched by the crowds next door. A five-minute walk from Amalfi and a world away; come for a quiet coffee on the square and a swim.
• 13.Fiordo di Furore — A hidden fjord where a cleft in the cliffs meets the sea beneath a soaring road bridge, with a tiny beach and a cluster of old fishermen's houses at the bottom. Photograph it from the bridge on the coast road, or clamber down the steps for a swim in the dramatic ravine; a striking, lesser-known stop between the towns.
• 15.Vietri sul Mare ceramics — At the coast's eastern end, Vietri sul Mare is the home of Amalfi's famous hand-painted ceramics — a town of workshops and shops piled with the bright majolica tiles, plates and jugs you'll have seen decorating every terrace along the coast. Browse the studios for a genuine souvenir; the domes and streets are tiled too.
