- 1.Positano — The image everyone comes for — a cascade of pink, peach and white houses tumbling down the cliff to a pebble beach and a majolica-domed church, laced with stepped lanes of boutiques. Wander down to the beach, look back up for the classic view, and stay for the sunset drinks; impossibly pretty, if impossibly crowded and steep.
- 5.The Path of the Gods — The coast's classic hike — the 'Sentiero degli Dei' runs high along the cliff tops from Bomerano to Nocelle above Positano, with staggering, uninterrupted views down to the sea and out to Capri the whole way. Around 7km, mostly downhill that direction, and unforgettable; go early, wear proper shoes and take water.
- 6.A boat trip along the cliffs — The coast is at its most jaw-dropping from the water — hire a small boat or join a tour to cruise beneath the towns, swim in hidden coves, slip into sea grottoes and see Positano rise from the sea. The best way to grasp the scale of the cliffs and escape the crowded lanes; a sunset cruise is magic.
- 7.Positano's beaches — The coast is cliffs, not sand, but its pebble beaches are gorgeous — Positano's Spiaggia Grande sits right below the town with its ranks of loungers and boats, and quieter Fornillo is a short cliff walk west. Rent a lounger for the day or grab a free patch; the swimming is lovely and the town view from the water is the best there is.
- 17.Ferry-hopping the towns — In season, fast ferries link Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Capri — by far the best way to move along the coast, skipping the traffic and swapping the road's hairpins for a breezy deck and cliff views. Buy tickets ahead in high summer, and use the boats to town-hop for lunch; part of the pleasure of the coast.
