The reason many come — the 'Blue Trail' links the five villages along the cliffs, with heart-stopping views down to the turquoise sea and the coloured villages ahead. The Vernazza–Monterosso stretch is the classic (and toughest); buy the Cinque Terre Card, check which sections are open (landslides close bits), and go early before the heat and crowds.
The prettiest of the five — a natural harbour of bobbing boats framed by tall coloured houses and a little church right on the water, with a medieval tower above. Have a drink at a harbour table, climb to the castle for the view down over the roofs, and stay past sunset when the day-trippers leave; postcard-perfect.
The most famous view in the Cinque Terre — from the cemetery path and the Nessun Dorma terrace above Manarola, the rainbow houses stack up from the rocky inlet with vineyards behind, glowing at sunset. Get there early evening with a spritz, watch the light turn gold, and see the village lights come on; unmissable.
The Cinque Terre's only real beach — a long stretch of sand and pebble along Monterosso's seafront, with rows of striped umbrellas, a free public section and easy swimming. The place to actually flop on sand between village hikes; busy in summer, but a proper beach day the other four villages can't offer.
The southern gateway village — tall painted houses cascading down a steep ravine to a tiny harbour of upturned boats, with a rock ledge that's the spot for a sunset aperitivo. Wander up the main street, climb to the castle, and clamber onto the harbour rocks with a drink as the sun drops; lively and photogenic.
The quiet, clifftop village with no harbour — reached up the 380-step 'Lardarina' staircase (or a shuttle) from its station, and rewarded with a sleepy old centre, a panoramic terrace and vineyards all around. The least touristy of the five and the one that still feels lived-in; come for the calm, the wine and the views.
Seeing the villages rise from the sea is the best way to grasp them — the local ferry (and small boat tours) links four of the five (all but harbourless Corniglia), gliding beneath the cliffs and vineyards. A gorgeous, breezy alternative to the packed trains and trails; take the last boat back for a sunset from the water.
The 'Path of Love' — a short, easy, paved clifftop walkway between Riomaggiore and Manarola, carved into the rock just above the sea and hung with lovers' padlocks. Long closed by rockfalls and now reopened in stages, it's the gentlest and most romantic of the trails; check it's open, and walk it at golden hour.
The little train that stitches the villages together — tunnelling through the headlands, it hops between all five (and La Spezia) in a few minutes each, running every 15–30 minutes. The quickest, cheapest way around when the trails are closed or the legs are tired; the Cinque Terre Card includes unlimited rides.
This is Liguria, the birthplace of pesto — the real thing, basil pounded with pine nuts, garlic and Parmigiano, tossed through trofie or trenette pasta with potato and beans. Eat it at a harbour table with a glass of crisp local white; fresh, green and unforgettable, and a world away from the jarred stuff.
With only one sandy beach, the Cinque Terre swims off its rocks and harbours — dive into the clear water from the ledges at Vernazza, Manarola and Riomaggiore like the locals do, or find a tiny pebble cove. Bring water shoes and a towel; a refreshing plunge in that turquoise sea is the perfect break from the trails.
The whole coast is stitched with dry-stone vineyard terraces held up by hundreds of kilometres of hand-built walls, producing crisp white wine and the rare, sweet 'sciacchetrà'. Walk the vineyard paths above Corniglia and Manarola, or taste at a village enoteca; the wine, and the astonishing human effort behind it, are part of the landscape's soul.
Cheap, fresh and everywhere — a paper cone ('cuoppo') of hot fried anchovies, calamari and prawns from a village takeaway, eaten on the harbour rocks. Monterosso's salted anchovies are a local specialty in their own right. The perfect walkable lunch between trails; follow the smell to the busiest little friggitoria.
Liguria's other great snack — dimpled, olive-oil-soaked focaccia (plain, or the cheese-filled 'focaccia di Recco'), and 'farinata', a thin baked chickpea pancake. Grab a warm slab from a bakery for a beach or trail lunch; simple, savoury and utterly moreish, and a fraction of the price of a sit-down meal.
High above each village sits its old pilgrimage sanctuary, reached by a steep path or a shuttle — quiet chapels with vast views back down over the coast and the vineyards, far from the harbour crowds. The one above Corniglia (San Bernardino) and Volastra above Manarola are the pick; a rewarding climb and a peaceful, panoramic pause.
The evening ritual — a chilled glass of local white or an Aperol spritz as the sun drops behind the cliffs, best from the rocks at Manarola or Riomaggiore or a Vernazza harbour table. The day-trippers are gone, the light turns pink on the houses, and the villages are at their most magical; the moment to linger.

The beach village
The centreThe largest and flattest of the five, and the only one with a proper sandy beach and a resort feel — a long seafront of loungers, an old town and a newer beach quarter. The easiest, most comfortable base, especially for families and anyone who wants to swim and skip the endless steps.

The 'sixth village' just south — a gorgeous, UNESCO-listed harbour town with a row of tall coloured houses, a dramatic clifftop church of St Peter over the sea, and Byron's cave below. Reached by a beautiful boat trip from the Cinque Terre; quieter, and arguably even prettier than the five.

The Riviera's most glamorous little harbour up the coast — a tiny, impossibly chic port of pastel houses, superyachts and designer cafés, backed by a green headland of walking trails. A pricey but pretty day out; pair it with a swim at neighbouring Paraggi.

The Leaning Tower and its dazzling white cathedral square are an easy train ride south — a classic photo stop and a proper Tuscan city beyond the famous field. Combine it with the coast on the way in or out; a couple of hours does the Piazza dei Miracoli.

Good time to goThe Cinque Terre — the 'Five Lands' — are five tiny fishing villages strung along a wild stretch of the Italian Riviera, each a tumble of candy-coloured houses wedged into a cliff or a ravine above the sea. Cars are all but banned; you move between them by a cliff-hugging footpath, a little train that tunnels through the headlands, or a boat. It's a UNESCO-protected landscape of terraced vineyards, pastel harbours and turquoise coves — impossibly photogenic, and in summer packed to the gills. Come to hike the coast between villages, swim off the rocks, eat pesto and fried anchovies at a harbour table, and watch the sun sink behind Manarola.
