Handy & well-connected

Santa Maria Novella

4 min · 1 km from the centre

The station quarter — a little less pretty, a lot more practical. Trains to Pisa, Siena and the airport leave from here, the Mercato Centrale is round the corner, and everything worth seeing is a short walk. Good value for how central it is.

The Medici Chapels
  • 10.Mercato Centrale & San Lorenzo — The cast-iron food hall by San Lorenzo — a lampredotto sandwich and a glass of red downstairs at ground level, then a whole upper floor of Tuscan food stalls open late. The leather stalls of the street market wrap around outside.
  • 14.Basilica di Santa Maria Novella — The Dominicans' church by the station, with a green-and-white marble front that's a Renaissance masterpiece in itself and Masaccio's Trinity inside — the painting that first nailed perspective. Quiet, and often had almost to yourself.
  • 17.The Medici Chapels — Michelangelo's other masterpiece — the Medici tombs, with Dawn, Dusk, Night and Day carved in marble. Quiet, staggering, and half the queue of the Accademia.
