• 14.Testaccio Market — Rome's most honest market — produce and butchers on one side, some of the city's best cheap lunch counters on the other. Eat a panino with the stallholders, not a menu turistico.
• 15.Carbonara in Testaccio — Guanciale, pecorino, egg, pepper — no cream, ever, and Testaccio's old kitchens guard the standard. Order it where the menu is short and the room is full of Romans arguing.
• 16.The Appian Way by bike — Rent a bike and roll down the original Roman road, past 2,000-year-old tombs and umbrella pines, traffic-free on Sundays. Ancient Rome with nobody else around.
• 19.Baths of Caracalla — The colossal ruins of an imperial bath complex — towering brick walls, mosaic floors and a sense of scale the Forum can't match, often gloriously empty. Summer opera plays here too.
