• 10.Basilica of Superga — A magnificent domed basilica on a hill east of the city, reached by a vintage rack railway, with the Savoy royal tombs below and a sweeping panorama of Turin against the Alps. The grandest view around; poignant, too, as the site of the 1949 Grande Torino air disaster.
• 12.Monte dei Cappuccini — A church on a low hill just across the Po, a short climb for the postcard view straight down the river to the Mole with the Alps behind. The easiest great viewpoint in town; magic at sunset.
• 13.Gran Madre & the Po — A neoclassical, Pantheon-like church facing the river across a handsome bridge — the gateway to the hill and, legend has it, tangled in the city's esoteric mysteries. A fine riverside spot for a stroll.
• 17.Sacra di San Michele — The dramatic abbey that inspired 'The Name of the Rose', clinging to a mountain peak west of the city — a steep climb to Gothic halls and vast views. Spectacular.
• 19.Villa della Regina — A hillside baroque villa with terraced Italian gardens and a fountain, looking straight over the whole city to the Alps. A lovely, uncrowded half-hour above the Po.
