• 3.Castelvecchio & the bridge — A red-brick medieval castle on the river, its fortified swallowtail bridge one of the great photo spots in Italy. Now a fine art museum in a famous Carlo Scarpa interior; walk the ramparts and the bridge at golden hour.
• 10.Basilica di San Zeno — One of Italy's finest Romanesque churches, a little west of the centre — a serene striped façade, famous bronze door panels and a Mantegna altarpiece. Verona's most beautiful church, and where Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet's wedding.
• 14.Walk the Adige & Lungadige — The riverside 'lungadige' paths loop the historic centre past bridges, weirs and the castle — a lovely, free way to see the city's shape and its best reflections. Time it for golden hour and cross Ponte Pietra to the hill.
• 20.Lake Garda (Sirmione) — Italy's biggest lake, half an hour by train — the storybook spa town of Sirmione on its spit, a castle in the water and Roman ruins at the tip. The easiest lake day.
