• 1.The Roman Arena — A colossal 1st-century amphitheatre in the heart of the city, better preserved than the Colosseum and still in use — climb the pink-marble tiers, and in summer see grand opera under the stars. The symbol of Verona; book opera tickets well ahead.
• 2.Piazza delle Erbe — The city's most beautiful square, on the site of the Roman forum — frescoed palazzi, a market, the Madonna Verona fountain and cafés under the arcades. The heart of Veronese life; sit with a spritz and watch the passeggiata.
• 4.Juliet's House & balcony — The 14th-century courtyard with 'the' balcony and a bronze Juliet whose statue is rubbed for luck — pure tourist theatre (the balcony's a modern add-on) but irresistible. Free to see the courtyard; go early to beat the crush.
• 7.Piazza dei Signori — The elegant 'living room' of Verona next to Piazza delle Erbe — Dante's statue, medieval and Renaissance palazzi, and the Scaliger tombs nearby. Quieter and grander; a lovely spot for a coffee among the arches.
• 8.Torre dei Lamberti — The 84m medieval tower over Piazza delle Erbe — a lift or a climb to the top for a 360° view over the terracotta rooftops and the Arena. The best in-town aerial view; the bells still ring the hours.
• 11.The Duomo — Verona's cathedral by the river, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic with a Titian Assumption inside and the old baptistery and cloisters alongside. Less mobbed than the big sights; a peaceful, beautiful stop near Ponte Pietra.
• 13.Aperitivo & Amarone — Verona sits in serious wine country — do an evening 'aperitivo' with a spritz or a glass of powerful local Amarone and cicchetti, then a plate of pastissada (horse or beef stew) or bigoli pasta. The Veronese ritual, best on a piazza.
