• 5.Ponte Pietra — The lovely Roman-and-medieval stone bridge over the Adige, rebuilt after the war from its own stones fished from the river. The classic Verona view, especially at sunset with the hill and cypresses behind; cross to the left bank for the theatre.
• 6.Castel San Pietro viewpoint — The terrace above the Roman theatre — reached by steps or a little funicular — with the whole rooftop panorama of Verona, the river bends and the Arena below. The best view in the city; go for sunset with a takeaway spritz.
• 9.The Roman Theatre — A 1st-century BC theatre carved into the left-bank hill, still used for summer Shakespeare and jazz, with a little archaeology museum in the convent above. Atmospheric ruins with a river-and-city view; quieter than the Arena.
• 12.Giardino Giusti — A perfect Renaissance garden on the left bank — box hedges, cypress avenues, a grotto and a belvedere with a lovely view back over the city. A calm, green hour away from the crowds; Goethe loved it.
