• 12.The Merenid Tombs viewpoint — On the hillside above the northern walls stand the ruined Marinid tombs, and from beside them the whole medina lies spread out below you in its bowl — a sea of flat roofs and minarets, magical at sunset as the light turns golden and the muezzins begin. A short taxi up; the best overview of Fez there is.
• 17.Borj Nord & the medina view — A hilltop fort above the city with an old-arms museum and, more to the point, the best panorama over the whole sea of medina rooftops. Time it for sunset.
• 18.Volubilis & Moulay Idriss — The best Roman ruins in Morocco, an hour away — mosaics, a triumphal arch and columns standing in the fields, often paired with the holy town of Moulay Idriss. A grand day out.
• 20.Ifrane & the Middle Atlas — An hour up into the Middle Atlas, an incongruous alpine town of pitched roofs and cedar forests where Barbary macaques roam — 'the Switzerland of Morocco'. A cool-air escape.
