• 1.Skyline Gondola & Luge — Ride the steep gondola to Bob's Peak for the jaw-dropping view over the lake, town and Remarkables — then race the downhill luge carts, or add the Ledge Bungy and swing. The essential first thing to do; go for sunset.
• 4.TSS Earnslaw & Walter Peak — Cruise the lake on the century-old coal-fired steamship 'Earnslaw' to the Walter Peak high-country farm for a sheep-shearing show and a barbecue lunch, mountains all around. A gentler, gorgeous half-day on the water.
• 5.Ben Lomond & the Tiki Trail — Hike the forested Tiki Trail up to the gondola (free), or push on up Ben Lomond for one of the great alpine day-walks — a stiff climb to a summit panorama over lake, ranges and beyond. Earn the view the hard way.
• 7.A Fergburger — The most famous burger in New Zealand — enormous, cheap-ish and genuinely excellent, from a tiny takeaway that draws a permanent queue. A Queenstown rite of passage; go off-peak, or grab pastries at Ferg Bakery next door.
• 8.Queenstown Gardens & lakefront — The leafy peninsula park jutting into the lake — big trees, a frisbee-golf course, a rose garden and a flat waterfront loop with mountain views the whole way. The town's free, restorative green heart; lovely for a stroll or picnic.
• 13.Kayak or paddleboard the lake — Get out onto the impossibly clear, cold water of Lake Wakatipu under your own steam — a paddle from the town beach with the peaks reflected around you, calmest in the still of morning. A serene, cheaper way to feel the setting.
• 15.Lake Wakatipu — The zigzag glacial lake at the centre of it all — startlingly clear and blue, ringed by mountains, and the reason every view here takes your breath away. Walk its shore, cruise it, or just sit on the town beach and take it in.
