• 1.Ponta da Piedade — The Algarve's signature view — a headland of golden sandstone cliffs, arches and sea stacks in impossibly clear turquoise water, reached by a clifftop path and a staircase down to the grottoes. Come at sunset when the rock glows, walk the cliff trail, and take a boat or kayak in among the caves below; the most beautiful spot on the coast.
• 3.Praia Dona Ana — The picture-perfect Lagos beach — golden sand tucked between tall ochre cliffs and sea stacks, in shallow, clear turquoise water, a short walk or drive south of town. It gets busy and the sand shrinks at high tide, so come earlier in the day; the most photogenic swim in Lagos.
• 8.Praia do Camilo — A jewel of a cove reached down a long wooden staircase near Ponta da Piedade — twin patches of golden sand split by a rock arch, in dazzlingly clear water framed by cliffs. Small and popular, so go early; the swim and snorkel to pair with the clifftop walk, and one of the prettiest little beaches on the coast.
• 10.Kayak or SUP the caves — The most hands-on way to explore the coast — paddle a kayak or stand-up board out from the beach into the grottoes and arches of Ponta da Piedade, slipping into caves the bigger boats can't reach. Guided tours run from Praia da Batata and Dona Ana; a brilliant, active morning in that turquoise water.
• 17.The Ponta da Piedade lighthouse & cliff walk — Above the grottoes stands a little lighthouse and the start of a stunning clifftop path that runs along the golden headland, with viewpoints down onto the arches, stacks and turquoise coves below. Walk a stretch at sunset for the best light of the day; an easy, unforgettable stroll to cap a Lagos trip.
