• 7.Zurriola Beach & surfing — The city's surf beach on the Gros side — an open, Atlantic-facing stretch with reliable waves, a young crowd and surf schools for beginners. Livelier and less genteel than La Concha; the place to catch a wave or watch one.
• 8.Kursaal — Rafael Moneo's pair of glowing glass cubes on the Gros seafront — the city's congress hall and the home of the film festival, lit up like lanterns at night. Striking modern architecture against the old-world bay.
• 16.Hondarribia — A gorgeous walled fishing town on the French border — a hilltop old quarter of half-timbered houses, and a marina district of bright fishermen's homes and pintxo bars. A perfect day out.
• 18.Pasaia — A hidden fishing village in a narrow sea inlet just east of the city — colourful houses reflected in still water, a little boat across, and a lovely cliff walk. Wonderfully unspoilt.
• 20.Monte Ulia — A wooded coastal mountain between the city and Pasaia — cliff-top paths, an old lighthouse and sweeping views back over La Concha. The local's escape from the beach crowds.
