• 1.Pike Place Market — The soul of Seattle — a century-old, multi-level market of fish-throwing mongers, flower stalls, craft shops and eateries above the waterfront. Come early, eat your way through, and find the gum wall below; the city's must-do.
• 5.The waterfront & Great Wheel — The revamped Elliott Bay waterfront — piers, the giant Ferris wheel, the aquarium and a new park, with ferries and floatplanes coming and going. A breezy stroll with Sound views; ride the wheel at golden hour.
• 6.Ferry to Bainbridge Island — Hop a car-ferry across Puget Sound for the ride alone — the skyline and Space Needle shrinking behind you, mountains all around — to the pretty island town of Winslow for lunch. A cheap, gorgeous half-day on the water.
• 8.Pioneer Square & the Underground — Seattle's oldest quarter — handsome red-brick Victorian blocks, galleries and bars, and the offbeat Underground Tour through the streets that were buried when the city rebuilt itself after the 1889 fire. Atmospheric and quirky.
• 12.Seattle Art Museum — The city's fine downtown art museum (spot the giant 'Hammering Man' out front), strong on Native American Northwest Coast art, plus its free waterfront Olympic Sculpture Park. A cultured couple of hours in the heart of town.
• 14.Seattle coffee culture — This is the city that caffeinated America — so skip the first Starbucks queue and do the third-wave thing at a serious roaster on Capitol Hill. A properly pulled espresso is a Seattle rite; the rainy weather makes more sense with a cup in hand.
• 15.Pacific seafood feast — The cold Pacific waters deliver the goods — wild salmon, sweet Dungeness crab, oysters by the dozen and a steaming bowl of clam chowder. Eat it at Pike Place or a waterfront table; the freshest, best seafood on the west coast.
