• 3.Place Bellecour & the Presqu'île — One of Europe's largest squares, a vast red-gravel expanse with a statue of Louis XIV, at the centre of the shopping peninsula. The city's meeting point and the start of a stroll up grand Rue de la République.
• 4.Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse — The temple of Lyonnais gastronomy — an indoor market of star traders in cheese, charcuterie, pastry and seafood, named for the city's legendary chef. Graze the counters, slurp oysters with a glass of white; a foodie pilgrimage.
• 5.Dinner in a bouchon — The soul of Lyon on a plate — a rowdy little bistro serving quenelles, andouillette, salade lyonnaise and praline tart, with a pot of Beaujolais. Hearty, old-fashioned and unforgettable; look for the 'authentic bouchon' label.
• 11.Place des Terreaux & Hôtel de Ville — A grand square framed by the ornate town hall and the fine-arts museum, with a monumental Bartholdi fountain of a chariot and horses. The civic heart of the Presqu'île; lovely lit up at night.
• 12.Fresque des Lyonnais — A vast, witty trompe-l'œil mural bringing 30 famous Lyonnais — from the Lumière brothers to a little chef — to life across a blank wall. Lyon is a city of painted walls; this is the best-loved, and free to find.
• 13.The Rhône riverbanks — The reclaimed Rhône banks (Berges du Rhône) are a long promenade of lawns, cycle paths and moored barge-bars — the city's favourite spot for a run, a drink or a sunset. Best on a warm evening with a glass in hand.
• 14.Musée des Beaux-Arts — One of France's richest art museums outside Paris, in a former abbey with a peaceful cloister garden — antiquities to Impressionists across dozens of rooms. A superb, calm half-day, and a fine wet-weather choice.
• 15.Institut Lumière — The birthplace of cinema — the Lumière brothers shot the first film here in 1895, and their family villa is now an absorbing museum of early moviemaking. A treat for film lovers, in a handsome garden setting.
