Push the doors: the traboules
📍 Vieux Lyon
Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse hide traboules — covered passageways cutting through buildings and courtyards, once used to move silk. Many are free to walk through; look for the small plaques or a lion's-head door handle, push gently, and be quiet as people still live there.
Eat in a real bouchon
📍 Presqu'île
For the genuine article, look for the 'Authentique Bouchon Lyonnais' label. Come hungry for quenelles, salade lyonnaise, andouillette and a tarte aux pralines, washed down with a pot of Beaujolais. It's rich, offal-friendly food — lean in.
Take the ficelle up, walk down
📍 Fourvière
Ride the little funicular (the 'ficelle') up to Fourvière for the basilica and the city view, then walk back down through the Roman theatres and into Vieux Lyon — all downhill, and you see the best of the hill on the way.

The birthplace of cinema — the Lumière brothers shot the first film here in 1895, and their family villa is now an absorbing museum of early moviemaking. A treat for film lovers, in a handsome garden setting.

Worth knowing: The centre is flat, walkable and threaded by metro, tram and two funiculars up Fourvière. You won't need a car; Beaujolais, the Alps and Provence are all easy train or drive trips.

A little rain
Good time to goLyon is France's great second city and its undisputed capital of food — a UNESCO-listed sweep of Roman ruins, pastel Renaissance old town and grand 19th-century boulevards set where the Rhône and Saône meet. It made silk and cinema, and it invented the bouchon, the convivial little bistro serving hearty Lyonnais cooking that made this a place people travel to eat. Two rivers, two hills (one for praying at Fourvière, one for working in silk-weaving Croix-Rousse) and a warren of secret covered passageways called traboules give it real texture. Less rushed and cheaper than Paris, with the Alps and Beaujolais on its doorstep, it's a city built for slow lunches and aimless wandering.
