• 1.Basilique de Fourvière & the hill — An extravagant white basilica crowning the hill, its mosaics and gilding almost overwhelming inside, with a terrace giving the definitive panorama over the city to the Alps. The symbol of Lyon; take the funicular up.
• 2.Vieux Lyon & the traboules — One of Europe's largest Renaissance districts — pastel façades, cobbled lanes and the secret traboules that thread through the buildings. Wander, push the passage doors, and duck into a bouchon; the heart of old Lyon.
• 6.Roman theatres of Fourvière — Two well-preserved Roman theatres cut into the hillside, dating to 15 BC when Lyon was capital of the Gauls — free to wander, and a summer stage for the Nuits de Fourvière festival. A beautiful, uncrowded ancient site with a view.
• 9.Cathédrale Saint-Jean — Lyon's Gothic-Romanesque cathedral in the old town, home to a 14th-century astronomical clock that still chimes with moving figures. Free to visit, with the funicular station beside it for the ride up to Fourvière.
