Things to do — all 15

  1. The Eiffel Tower sparkling, from Trocadéro

On the hour after dark it glitters for five minutes, and the Trocadéro terrace across the river is the place to be standing when it does. Going up is fine; watching it is better.

free to watch; summit €29Saint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  2. The Louvre — one wing, done well

The biggest museum on earth defeats completists. Book the 9am slot, pick one wing, give the Mona Lisa its two minutes and spend your energy where the crowds aren't — the Winged Victory staircase at opening is worth the whole trip.

    €22, book aheadLe Marais
  3. Notre-Dame & the island

Risen from the fire and cleaner than it's looked in centuries. Free to enter, queue moves fast — then walk the Seine-side gardens behind it and cross to Île Saint-Louis for the famous ice cream.

    FreeSaint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  4. Arc de Triomphe & the Champs-Élysées

Climb to the top for the star of twelve avenues fanning out below, then walk the Champs-Élysées down toward the Tuileries.

    €16 rooftopSaint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  5. Sacré-Cœur

The white basilica crowning Montmartre — the steps out front are the city's favourite free viewpoint at sunset.

    Free (dome €8)Montmartre
  6. Musée d'Orsay

Every Impressionist painting you grew up seeing on posters, hanging in a converted railway station — and the clock-window view over the Seine as a bonus. Half a day, perfectly sized.

    €16Saint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  7. Sainte-Chapelle

Fifteen-metre walls of 13th-century stained glass that turn the room into the inside of a jewel — the single most stunning interior in Paris. Go on a sunny morning; it runs on light.

    €13Saint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  8. Montmartre before the buses

At 8am the hill belongs to bakery queues and cats — climb the back stairs from Lamarck, circle the vineyards and windmills, and reach Sacré-Cœur's steps as the city below turns gold.

    FreeMontmartre
  9. Palace of Versailles

A day trip out of the city to the Sun King's palace — the Hall of Mirrors and gardens you need a whole day for. Book ahead, go early.

    €21, day tripSaint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  10. The Catacombs

The bones of six million Parisians stacked in tunnels under the city — eerie, unforgettable, and you must book a slot online.

    €29, book aheadSaint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  11. Musée Rodin

The sculptor's mansion and rose garden, with The Thinker and The Kiss set among the hedges — the loveliest small museum in Paris.

    €14Saint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  12. Luxembourg Gardens, done slowly

Green metal chairs by the fountain, kids sailing wooden boats, old men at chess — the Parisian art of doing nothing, perfected. Claim a chair, angle it at the sun, stay.

    FreeSaint-Germain & Latin Quarter
  13. L'As du Fallafel's queue

The rue des Rosiers falafel that launched a thousand arguments — overflowing, sauced, eaten walking the Marais's oldest street. The queue is long and moves fast and is part of it.

    €9Le Marais
  14. The croissant benchmark

Find the bakery on your corner with a queue of locals at 8am and order the croissant and a pain au chocolat. Eat both standing. This is the cheapest world-class food experience in Europe.

    €1.50–3Canal Saint-Martin & République
  15. Apéro on the Canal Saint-Martin

When the sun's out, the canal banks become the city's living room — cheese, wine from the corner caviste, feet over the water as the iron bridges swing open for barges. How young Paris does evenings.

Paris is the most imagined city on earth, which is its burden and its gift — you arrive with the film already playing in your head, and the city's job is to interrupt it. The interruptions are the good part: a market street at 9am, a bakery queue, the size of the sky over the Seine. The famous things mostly survive their fame — the Louvre really is that good — but Paris rewards the visitor who does one big sight a day and spends the rest of it sitting, walking and eating like a local instead of collecting like a tourist. Four nights is the honest minimum.
