FoodLocal tip

Markthal and the Fenix food

📍 Markthal / Katendrecht

Rotterdam is modern and bold. Locals graze the Markthal's arch and the Fenix Food Factory in old dockland Katendrecht — craft beer, cheese, global bites in a warehouse. Sunday is liveliest.

FoodLocal tip

Kapsalon, the local invention

📍 everywhere

The 'kapsalon' — fries, shawarma, melted cheese, salad and garlic sauce in a tray — was invented here by a Rotterdam barber. A proper late-night local fill-up from a döner shop.

RitualLocal tip

Architecture by bike

📍 the centre

Bombed flat in the war, Rotterdam rebuilt wild — Cube Houses, the Erasmus Bridge, the port. Locals see it by bike; loop the water and the Kop van Zuid rather than walking.

Things to do — all 20

  1. The Markthal

The horseshoe-shaped market hall with apartments arced over a food court, its vast curved ceiling painted with a psychedelic 'Horn of Plenty' mural. Come hungry — a hundred stalls of cheese, stroopwafels, Surinamese roti and more under one huge roof.

    Free; food €5–12Centrum & Blaak
  2. The Cube Houses

Piet Blom's forest of yellow houses tilted onto their corners, the most photographed thing in Rotterdam — and you can step inside the 'Show Cube' to see how anyone actually lives at 45 degrees. Delightfully strange, right by the Markthal.

Free outside; Show Cube €3Centrum & Blaak
  3. The Erasmus Bridge

The soaring white cable-stayed bridge the locals call 'the Swan', the symbol of the modern city, linking the centre to the skyscrapers of the south bank. Walk or cycle across it, then look back for the classic Rotterdam skyline shot.

    FreeKop van Zuid & Wilhelminapier
  4. Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen

The world's first fully public art storage — a giant mirrored bowl reflecting the whole city, with 150,000 works stacked on view across its floors and a rooftop forest and restaurant on top. Go for the building and the roof even if you skip the art.

    €20Centrum & Blaak
  5. The Euromast

The 1960 observation tower in the park, still the best straight-up view of the whole city, port and river — 100 metres up, with a rotating glass lift to the top for the vertigo, and abseiling for the truly brave. Sunset is the time.

    €17.50Kop van Zuid & Wilhelminapier
  6. A Spido harbour tour

Rotterdam is the biggest port in Europe, and the classic way to grasp it is from the water — a Spido boat out among the container terminals, cranes and shipyards, past the skyline and back. An hour and a quarter that explains the whole city.

    €17.50Kop van Zuid & Wilhelminapier
  7. Witte de Withstraat

Rotterdam's cultural high street — galleries and design shops by day, and the densest run of bars and restaurants in the city by night. The place to eat and drink your way along one street; start with a rooftop and follow the crowd from there.

Free to wanderWitte de With & Cool
  8. Hotel New York & Wilhelminapier

The old Holland America Line headquarters, from whose quay a century of emigrants sailed for a new life — now a grand café-hotel beneath the skyscrapers of the south bank. Come for coffee and cake, and the history in the walls.

  9. Historic Delfshaven

The rare survivor — a genuine old Dutch harbour of stepped gables and a working windmill along a quiet canal, west of the centre. The prettiest, most 'Holland' corner of Rotterdam, and blessedly free of crowds. Best on a slow morning.

  10. The SS Rotterdam

The last great Dutch ocean liner, retired and moored at Katendrecht as a hotel you can tour — the engine rooms, the grand staircases and the 1950s glamour of transatlantic travel, kept intact. A ship-sized time capsule with a deck bar and a view.

    €17 tourKatendrecht
  11. Fenix Food Factory, Katendrecht

A former warehouse on the old docks turned local food hall — craft beer, cheese, fresh bread and a butcher, with waterfront tables looking back at the skyline. The heart of the reborn Katendrecht peninsula, and the best casual eat in the city.

    €6–14Katendrecht
  12. The Kunsthal

Rem Koolhaas's early landmark in the Museumpark — not a collection but a machine for changing exhibitions, from fashion to photography to pop culture, always worth a look. Architecture buffs come for the building; everyone else for whatever's on.

    €16Centrum & Blaak
  13. The Maritime Museum & old harbour

By the Leuvehaven basin full of historic ships and cranes, a hands-on museum of Rotterdam's whole reason to exist — the sea, the port and the trade. Great for kids, and the outdoor harbour of old vessels is free to wander.

€17.50; harbour freeWitte de With & Cool
  14. The Pilgrim Fathers' Church

The plain Gothic church in Delfshaven where the Pilgrim Fathers gathered to pray in 1620 before boarding the Speedwell for the New World. A quiet, moving stop with a big place in American history, right on the old harbour.

    FreeDelfshaven
  15. Dutch bites & world flavours

Half of Rotterdam's food is Dutch classics — fresh herring from a stand, hot bitterballen with a beer, a fresh stroopwafel — and half is the flavours the port brought in, from Surinamese roti to Cape Verdean cachupa. Graze across both; it's the taste of the city.

    €3–10 a biteCentrum & Blaak
  16. Kinderdijk windmills

Nineteen historic windmills lined up along the canals just outside the city — the postcard of old Holland, and a UNESCO site. Cycle or boat between them; climb inside one.

    CheapDelfshaven
  17. Rotterdam Zoo (Blijdorp)

One of Europe's best zoos — an oceanarium, a butterfly jungle and elephants, all thoughtfully landscaped. A great, easy day out, especially with kids.

    MidCentrum & Blaak
  18. The Van Nelle Factory

A gleaming 1930s glass-and-steel factory, a masterpiece of modern architecture and a UNESCO site — the building that helped make Rotterdam a design capital. A pilgrimage for design fans.

    CheapDelfshaven
  19. De Hef bridge

The beloved old railway lift-bridge, its steel towers rising over the harbour — retired, saved, and now a proud icon of the industrial south bank. A great photo, day or night.

  20. Delft day trip

The perfect little Vermeer town 15 minutes away — canals, a leaning church tower, the famous blue pottery, and a gorgeous market square. Old Holland in miniature.

Worth knowing: No beach in the city, but the North Sea sands of Hoek van Holland and Scheveningen are a half-hour away by metro or train. The 'water' here is the working river Maas and the harbours — cross it by water taxi or the free Spido ferries.

Rotterdam is the anti-Amsterdam — flattened in 1940 and rebuilt from scratch, so instead of gables and canals you get Europe's most adventurous skyline, a giant working port, and a young, multicultural, get-things-done energy. It's a city of architecture you can walk into: cube houses, a horseshoe market hall, a mirrored art depot. Less pretty than the rest of Holland, far more surprising, and an easy half-hour from Amsterdam if you want the contrast.
