• 3.The Erasmus Bridge — The soaring white cable-stayed bridge the locals call 'the Swan', the symbol of the modern city, linking the centre to the skyscrapers of the south bank. Walk or cycle across it, then look back for the classic Rotterdam skyline shot.
• 5.The Euromast — The 1960 observation tower in the park, still the best straight-up view of the whole city, port and river — 100 metres up, with a rotating glass lift to the top for the vertigo, and abseiling for the truly brave. Sunset is the time.
• 6.A Spido harbour tour — Rotterdam is the biggest port in Europe, and the classic way to grasp it is from the water — a Spido boat out among the container terminals, cranes and shipyards, past the skyline and back. An hour and a quarter that explains the whole city.
• 8.Hotel New York & Wilhelminapier — The old Holland America Line headquarters, from whose quay a century of emigrants sailed for a new life — now a grand café-hotel beneath the skyscrapers of the south bank. Come for coffee and cake, and the history in the walls.
