• 4.Beach clubs — Nikki Beach & Elviria — The Costa del Sol's beach-club scene at full volume — Nikki Beach out at Elviria is the original, with day-beds, champagne showers and a DJ pool party that runs all afternoon. Book a bed (and expect a minimum spend); the height of the summer-season Marbella cliché, and a lot of fun for a splurge.
• 11.Espetos at a chiringuito — The coast's signature — fresh sardines skewered on a cane and grilled over a driftwood fire, served right on the sand at a beach chiringuito. Head east toward Elviria for the laid-back beach bars rather than the flashy strips; a plate of smoky espetos and a cold beer, feet in the sand, is the real Costa del Sol.
• 17.Elviria & the east beaches — East of town the coast calms down — Elviria and its neighbours have some of Marbella's widest, cleanest beaches, backed by pine and low-key chiringuitos rather than clubs and traffic. The pick for a quieter, better-value beach day (and where families base themselves); a car or bus gets you there.
