Marbella's best-kept secret — a maze of whitewashed, flower-draped lanes climbing from the seafront to the pretty Plaza de los Naranjos ('Orange Square'), lined with tapas terraces and framed by a 16th-century town hall. Genuinely charming and a world away from the yachts; come for an evening wander and dinner in the square.
The Costa del Sol's glitziest marina — a parade of superyachts, designer flagship stores, supercars and waterfront terraces where the point is to see and be seen. Even if it's not your scene it's a spectacle; stroll the quay at sunset, grab a drink, and watch the money go by.
Marbella's long golden beaches are strung together by a palm-lined seafront promenade that runs for miles — walk or cycle it between the old town and the Golden Mile, past chiringuitos, beach bars and sun-loungers. The Costa del Sol's beach-club scene at full volume — Nikki Beach out at Elviria is the original, with day-beds, champagne showers and a DJ pool party that runs all afternoon. Book a bed (and expect a minimum spend); the height of the summer-season Marbella cliché, and a lot of fun for a splurge.
The palm-lined promenade linking the old town to the beach is an open-air gallery of ten bronze Salvador Dalí sculptures — long-legged elephants and dancing figures set among the fountains. A short, pretty stroll from the Alameda park down to the sea; a nice surprise between the shops and the sand.
For all the flash on the coast, Marbella's best eating is up in the old-town lanes — busy little tapas bars doing fried fish, garlic prawns, Iberian ham and cold Andalusian wine, at a fraction of Puerto Banús prices. Do a crawl of the plazas around the square; the tastiest, best-value meal in town.
The legendary stretch of coast between Marbella and Puerto Banús — grand five-star hotels behind the palms, the Marbella Club and Puente Romano set the tone, and the promenade runs right along the sand. Walk or cycle it for the beach-club glamour, or just to gawp at the villas; the smart heart of resort Marbella.
La Concha ('the shell') is the mountain that towers over Marbella — a tough but spectacular 4–5 hour hike to a ridge with the whole coast, and Africa on a clear day, at your feet. For an easier hit, drive up to the Refugio de Juanar for a gentle forest trail and the same big views; go early to beat the heat.
When Marbella parties, it parties in Banús — the big clubs behind the marina (and the legendary Olivia Valere up the hill) pull international DJs and a dressed-up, free-spending crowd through the summer. Expensive, glitzy and late; dress the part, and expect table service and eye-watering bar tabs.
The Golden Mile is beach-club central — the smart hotel clubs along the sand do day-beds, pools, long lunches and cocktails by the sea for a polished, grown-up version of the Marbella beach day. Reserve a bed (minimum spend applies); the easiest way to feel the glamour without a nightclub tab.
The coast's signature — fresh sardines skewered on a cane and grilled over a driftwood fire, served right on the sand at a beach chiringuito. Head east toward Elviria for the laid-back beach bars rather than the flashy strips; a plate of smoky espetos and a cold beer, feet in the sand, is the real Costa del Sol.
The old town's handsome parish church, with its baroque doorway and a fine organ, anchors a quiet quarter of little plazas — nearby, the small Museo del Grabado houses Spanish contemporary prints (Picasso, Miró) in a 16th-century hospital. A calm, cultured half-hour away from the beach and the bling.
Behind Puerto Banús, the big Saturday street market in Nueva Andalucía is a Marbella institution — stalls of leather, ceramics, fruit and cheap sunglasses, with a separate Sunday flea market for bric-a-brac. A cheerful, down-to-earth morning that undercuts the marina's price tags; go early before it heats up.
The beaches either side of the marina — Levante to the east, the smarter clubs to the west — put you a short walk from the yachts, the shops and the nightlife, with fine golden sand and the usual run of chiringuitos. The base for a beach day with the marina buzz on tap; busy and pricier than the east.
The hills behind Puerto Banús are the 'Golf Valley' — a cluster of famous courses (Aloha, Los Naranjos, Las Brisas) laid out below La Concha, and the reason many come to Marbella at all. Green fees aren't cheap, but the setting is superb; book tee times ahead in spring and autumn, the prime seasons.
The old town's leafy little park — tiled benches, a fountain, towering ficus trees and shady terraces, a cool spot to pause between the lanes and the beach at the top of Avenida del Mar. A small, pretty piece of everyday Marbella; grab an ice cream and watch the town go by.
East of town the coast calms down — Elviria and its neighbours have some of Marbella's widest, cleanest beaches, backed by pine and low-key chiringuitos rather than clubs and traffic. The pick for a quieter, better-value beach day (and where families base themselves); a car or bus gets you there.

A little rain
Good time to goMarbella is the Costa del Sol at its most glamorous — and, surprisingly, at its most charming. Behind the reputation for superyachts and beach clubs sits one of Andalusia's prettiest old towns, a maze of whitewashed lanes and orange-tree plazas that most day-trippers never reach. Down on the coast it splits into two moods: the flashy marina of Puerto Banús, all designer boutiques, Lamborghinis and late nightclubs, and the long run of golden beaches and palm-lined promenade in between. Add near-guaranteed sun, the mountain of La Concha as a backdrop, and Ronda and the white villages an hour inland, and it's a resort that works for a party, a beach week, or a laid-back escape — depending entirely on which corner you pick.
