The town's landmark — the Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller from the stones of the ancient Mausoleum, standing guard between the two bays. Inside is the superb Museum of Underwater Archaeology, with Bronze Age shipwrecks and their cargoes. The essential sight; climb the towers for the best view over Bodrum.
The ruins of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — the vast tomb built for King Mausolus that gave us the word 'mausoleum'. Little stands today, but the site and its small museum tell the story of ancient Halicarnassus. More for the history than the spectacle; a quiet, atmospheric stop between the beaches.
Bodrum's after-dark engine — Cumhuriyet Caddesi, better known as Bar Street, a solid run of bars and clubs along the eastern bay, anchored by the open-air megaclub Halikarnas on the water. Loud, late and legendary in Turkey; dive in for a big night, or just walk it for the spectacle.
The palm-lined harbour front curving between the castle and the town — gulets and yachts moored alongside, waterfront cafés and restaurants, and the evening promenade where all of Bodrum strolls. The heart of town life; come at sunset for a drink with the castle lit up across the water.
Behind the front, a maze of narrow lanes climbs the hill in a tumble of white cubic houses, blue shutters and cascading bougainvillea, dotted with boutiques, galleries and courtyard cafés. A lovely, cooler wander away from the harbour crowds; the prettiest, most photogenic side of Bodrum.
The peninsula is best from the water — day boats hop the coves and islands for swim stops and lunch, and the classic Aegean 'Blue Cruise' aboard a wooden gulet drifts between hidden bays over a few days. Charter a gulet with a group or join a day trip; the highlight of many a Bodrum holiday.
The peninsula's most romantic evening — fish restaurants right on the water at the old fishing village of Gümüşlük, where you can wade out to Rabbit Island as the sun sets behind it. Book a waterside table, order the mezes and the catch of the day; slow, beautiful and a world away from the clubs.
The peninsula's glossiest harbour — a marina of gleaming superyachts backed by designer boutiques, waterfront restaurants and cocktail bars, drawing a moneyed international crowd. Even if you're not berthing a yacht, it's a fun evening stroll and a drink among the glamour; the smart north's showpiece.
Bodrum's own beaches are modest, but the peninsula has plenty — sandy family bays at Bitez and Ortakent, watersports at Gümbet, and quieter coves out west. Most are backed by beach clubs with sunbeds and bars; pick one by vibe (young and loud, or calm and family) and settle in for the day.
Turkey's answer to St Tropez — the north-coast resort of Türkbükü, where wooden jetties instead of beaches host chic beach clubs, day-beds and a celebrity-spotting crowd that lunches long and parties late. Pricey and posey, but a quintessential glamorous-Bodrum day; book a jetty bed ahead in season.
One of the oldest theatres in Anatolia, carved into the hillside above the town in the 4th century BC and still used for summer concerts — its stone tiers frame a superb view over Bodrum, the castle and the bay. Free, floodlit at night, and a great spot for sunset; a quick, rewarding climb from the centre.
The Aegean does Turkey's best mezes — a spread of small cold and hot plates (stuffed vine leaves, whipped aubergine, sea greens, grilled octopus) eaten slowly over glasses of aniseed rakı and, on the coast, fresh fish. Find a proper 'meyhane' or a waterside fish restaurant; long, sociable and delicious.
A row of old stone windmills stands on the ridge between Bodrum and Gümbet, a classic sunset viewpoint looking down over both bays and the castle. Drive or walk up in the golden hour; a lovely, breezy spot for photos and a moment above the resort bustle.
The best of Bodrum is spread around the peninsula — hire a car and loop the coves and villages: boho Gümüşlük, windmill-topped Turgutreis for the sunset, chic Yalıkavak, and quiet pine-backed bays in between. A relaxed day of swims, lunches and viewpoints; the way to see the 'real' Bodrum beyond the town.
A proper hammam is the classic Turkish ritual — steam on a heated marble slab, a vigorous foam scrub and a massage that leaves you glowing. Bodrum has several, from traditional town baths to spa versions in the resorts. A brilliant, cheap treat after a day on the beach; go for the full scrub-and-foam.
The surviving western gate of ancient Halicarnassus, where Alexander the Great laid siege in 334 BC — twin towers and a stretch of the old city walls, with a moat and a small site to wander. Low-key and often deserted; a genuine slice of the ancient city for history buffs, a short way from the centre.
Turkey does breakfast like nowhere else — a sprawling spread of cheeses, olives, tomatoes, eggs, honey and clotted cream, fresh bread and endless tea, best over a lazy morning before the heat. Seek out a village 'kahvaltı' spot or a garden café on the peninsula; a feast, and the local start to any good day.

One of the greatest ancient cities of the Mediterranean — a vast, superbly preserved Roman metropolis with the towering Library of Celsus, a grand theatre and marble streets, near Selçuk. A long but essential day trip north; go early to beat the heat and the tour buses.

The surreal 'cotton castle' — dazzling white travertine terraces of mineral pools cascading down a hillside, with the ruins of Roman Hierapolis and a thermal spring pool to bathe in on top. A long day trip inland, but one of Turkey's signature sights; wear something you can swim in.

A gorgeous, unspoilt peninsula of pine-clad hills, quiet coves and almond groves, ending at the ancient port of Knidos where two seas meet. Far slower and wilder than Bodrum; a lovely day out (or an overnight) for anyone wanting the Aegean without the crowds.

Good time to goBodrum is the glamorous heart of Turkey's Aegean coast — a town of bougainvillea-draped white cubic houses tumbling down to two bright bays, watched over by a honey-coloured crusader castle. It's long been the Turks' own favourite summer playground, and it shows: a buzzing marina, a notorious nightlife strip, and a whole peninsula of beach clubs, boho fishing villages and superyacht harbours fanning out around it. There's real history too — this was ancient Halicarnassus, home to one of the Seven Wonders of the World — but the modern draw is the mix: swim and sightsee by day, then dance till dawn or eat fish with your feet in the water, depending which corner of the peninsula you pick.
