• 3.Fremont Street Experience — Old downtown Vegas under a five-block LED canopy — cover bands, zip-lines, vintage neon and $5 tables. Louder, cheaper and more chaotic than the Strip, and the closest thing to the city's rowdy old soul. Go after dark when the light show fires up.
• 7.The Neon Museum — A boneyard of the city's old signs — the giant Stardust, Sahara and cowboy neons, retired and glowing again after dark. A gorgeous, nostalgic hour and the best photos in Vegas. Book the night visit to see them relit.
• 12.The Mob Museum — In the old federal courthouse downtown — the surprisingly gripping story of organised crime and the city it built, with a speakeasy in the basement. Smart, slick and more fun than it sounds; a proper Vegas back-story.
• 15.The 18b Arts District — Downtown's antidote to the Strip — galleries, muralled walls, vintage shops, breweries and the best independent coffee and cocktails, all local. Liveliest on First Friday each month when the whole district throws a street party.
