In summer, life is indoors by day. Locals hit Red Rock Canyon or Mount Charleston at dawn for a hike before the furnace, then pools and AC by afternoon. Never underestimate the desert heat.

The free show that never gets old — a lake of water jets dancing to music every 15–30 minutes after dusk. Grab a spot on the railing, or watch from a Strip-side bar above. The most romantic thing in a city not known for it.
Old downtown Vegas under a five-block LED canopy — cover bands, zip-lines, vintage neon and $5 tables. Louder, cheaper and more chaotic than the Strip, and the closest thing to the city's rowdy old soul. Go after dark when the light show fires up.
Twenty minutes from the Strip, a different planet — a 13-mile scenic loop through burning-red sandstone cliffs and desert, with hikes and rock-climbing. The antidote to the neon, and proof of where you actually are. Go early for the cool and the light.
Vegas is the world capital of the big show, and the resident Cirque productions ('O' at the Bellagio, Mystère, Kà) are the jaw-droppers. Book ahead, dress up a little, and pick one — it's the arty spectacle the city does better than anywhere.
One of the world's tallest observation wheels, at the LINQ — a 30-minute rotation with the whole valley and the Strip laid out below. Go at sunset, or pay extra for the open-bar cabin. The best big-picture view of the madness.
A boneyard of the city's old signs — the giant Stardust, Sahara and cowboy neons, retired and glowing again after dark. A gorgeous, nostalgic hour and the best photos in Vegas. Book the night visit to see them relit.
Whether you gamble or not, an hour on a big casino floor — the noise, the free drinks while you play, the low-limit blackjack or a spin of roulette — is the Vegas ritual. Set a budget, tip your dealer, and treat it as a show you're in.
The wraparound-screen megavenue behind the Venetian — the exterior alone is the city's newest icon, and a show or the immersive 'Postcard from Earth' inside is unlike any screen you've seen. Even just seeing it lit up at night is worth the walk.
The most gloriously over-the-top of the themed resorts — a painted-sky indoor Grand Canal with singing gondoliers, plus St Mark's Square in miniature. Ridiculous and wonderful; ride the gondola or just wander the frescoed halls for free.
Where Las Vegas actually eats — a two-mile strip of the city's best ramen, dim sum, Korean barbecue, hot pot and late-night noodles, open till the small hours. Cheaper and better than any Strip buffet; go hungry and follow the queues.
In the old federal courthouse downtown — the surprisingly gripping story of organised crime and the city it built, with a speakeasy in the basement. Smart, slick and more fun than it sounds; a proper Vegas back-story.
An off-Strip warehouse of immersive art, neon caves and the mind-bending Meow Wolf 'Omega Mart' — walk into a fake supermarket and fall down a rabbit hole. The trippiest, most Instagram-able hours in town, and refreshingly not about gambling.
In the hot months the party is at the pool — the dayclubs (Encore Beach Club, Ayu) are a Vegas institution, all DJs, cabanas and cocktails in the sun. Pricey and a scene, but a rite of passage on a summer weekend. Book a table or go early.
Downtown's antidote to the Strip — galleries, muralled walls, vintage shops, breweries and the best independent coffee and cocktails, all local. Liveliest on First Friday each month when the whole district throws a street party.

The centreThe four-mile boulevard of mega-resorts, fountains, shows and casino floors — the reason most people come. Everything is walkable-ish and open 24/7, but it's the priciest, busiest and most sensory-overloaded base. Stay here to be in the thick of it, steps from the neon and the clubs.

25 min · 22 kmAn upscale master-planned suburb on the western edge, minutes from Red Rock Canyon — leafy, quiet, with parks, golf and Downtown Summerlin's shops. A relaxed, family-friendly base far from the neon, best if you have a car and want desert hikes and calm nights over casino floors.

Worth knowing: The Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) is technically in Paradise, not the city proper — but it's where nearly everyone stays. Downtown is the older, cheaper, more characterful heart. Distances look short but the Strip is deceptively long — walking end to end takes hours in the heat.

One of the great feats of American engineering, wedged in a desert canyon on the Colorado River, with the vast Lake Mead behind it. Walk out over the dam or the bypass bridge for the drop; an easy, jaw-dropping half-day from the Strip.

The nearest slice of the Grand Canyon to Vegas — the West Rim with its glass Skywalk, on Hualapai land. Not the classic South Rim view, but a doable long day or a spectacular helicopter hop straight from the Strip.

Nevada's oldest state park — a wonderland of flame-red sandstone, slot canyons and 3,000-year-old petroglyphs, quieter and wilder than Red Rock. A stunning, uncrowded desert day trip for anyone with a car.

Better avoidedLas Vegas is a mirage made real — a city of pure spectacle rising out of the Mojave Desert, where replica Venices and Eiffel Towers line a four-mile boulevard of casinos, fountains and 24-hour excess. It is loud, artificial and gloriously unashamed: world-class shows and celebrity-chef dining, pools and clubs, and the constant electric hum of the gaming floor. But step off the Strip and there's a real city with a great food scene, a revived downtown, and — half an hour away — the raw red canyons and desert silence that remind you where you actually are. Come for the fantasy; the desert is the reality check.
