• 1.The Strip after dark — There's nothing else like walking Las Vegas Boulevard at night — the fountains, the fake skylines, the crowds and the sheer wattage of it. Free, endless people-watching, and best from about the Bellagio up to the Venetian. Wear comfortable shoes; it's longer than it looks.
• 2.The Bellagio Fountains — The free show that never gets old — a lake of water jets dancing to music every 15–30 minutes after dusk. Grab a spot on the railing, or watch from a Strip-side bar above. The most romantic thing in a city not known for it.
• 5.A Cirque du Soleil show — Vegas is the world capital of the big show, and the resident Cirque productions ('O' at the Bellagio, Mystère, Kà) are the jaw-droppers. Book ahead, dress up a little, and pick one — it's the arty spectacle the city does better than anywhere.
• 6.The High Roller wheel — One of the world's tallest observation wheels, at the LINQ — a 30-minute rotation with the whole valley and the Strip laid out below. Go at sunset, or pay extra for the open-bar cabin. The best big-picture view of the madness.
• 8.The casino floor — Whether you gamble or not, an hour on a big casino floor — the noise, the free drinks while you play, the low-limit blackjack or a spin of roulette — is the Vegas ritual. Set a budget, tip your dealer, and treat it as a show you're in.
• 9.Sphere — The wraparound-screen megavenue behind the Venetian — the exterior alone is the city's newest icon, and a show or the immersive 'Postcard from Earth' inside is unlike any screen you've seen. Even just seeing it lit up at night is worth the walk.
• 10.The Venetian & a gondola ride — The most gloriously over-the-top of the themed resorts — a painted-sky indoor Grand Canal with singing gondoliers, plus St Mark's Square in miniature. Ridiculous and wonderful; ride the gondola or just wander the frescoed halls for free.
• 14.A dayclub pool party — In the hot months the party is at the pool — the dayclubs (Encore Beach Club, Ayu) are a Vegas institution, all DJs, cabanas and cocktails in the sun. Pricey and a scene, but a rite of passage on a summer weekend. Book a table or go early.
