What a friend who lives here would tell you

The real spots and the timing — from locals, not guidebooks. The stuff a top-10 list will never give you.

RitualLocal tip

Cuban coffee o'clock

📍 Little Havana & Downtown

Locals take a mid-morning and mid-afternoon 'cafecito' break — a tiny, sweet, jet-fuel Cuban espresso poured into thimble cups to share at a ventanita (walk-up window). A colada is the group-sized version.

NeighbourhoodLocal tip

Skip South Beach to go out

📍 Wynwood & Little Havana

Locals leave Ocean Drive's overpriced clubs to tourists. They drink at Wynwood's breweries and the live salsa at Ball & Chain in Little Havana — cheaper, realer, and where the city actually dances.

RitualLocal tip

Beach the local way

📍 Mid-Beach & Key Biscayne

South Beach is the scene; locals swim quieter stretches — the boardwalk up in Mid-Beach, or Crandon Park and Bill Baggs on Key Biscayne. Go early before the storms and the parking fills.

Things to do — all 15

  1. Ocean Drive & the beach

The postcard Miami — a strip of neon-lit Art Deco hotels facing the wide white sand, palms and rollerbladers. Touristy and loud, but walking it once (and swimming off South Beach) is non-negotiable. Best in the early morning light or after dark.

    FreeSouth Beach
  2. The Art Deco District

The world's largest collection of 1930s Art Deco — hundreds of pastel, porthole-windowed buildings around South Beach. Do the free self-guided walk or a guided tour; it's why the whole island is protected, and gorgeous in the low sun.

    FreeSouth Beach
  3. Wynwood Walls

An open-air museum of giant murals by street artists from around the world, in a district that's now all galleries, breweries and cool bars. Miami's most photogenic hour; free to wander the surrounding streets, a ticket for the Walls courtyard.

    ~$12Wynwood
  4. Calle Ocho & Domino Park

The heart of Little Havana — old men slamming dominoes in Máximo Gómez Park, cigar shops, murals and the smell of roast pork. Walk Eighth Street, buy a guava pastry, and feel the city's Cuban pulse. Liveliest on the last Friday of the month.

    FreeLittle Havana
  5. Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

A 1916 Italian-style villa on Biscayne Bay, all frescoed rooms and formal gardens running down to the water. The most beautiful, least Miami thing in Miami — and a magnet for photoshoots. Book ahead; go when it opens to beat the heat.

    ~$25Coconut Grove
  6. Stone crab at Joe's

Miami's signature feast — sweet stone-crab claws with mustard sauce, an institution since 1913 at Joe's on South Beach. In season (October–May) it's worth the wait and the price; out of season, any seafood spot does the local catch.

    $$$South Beach
  7. Pérez Art Museum (PAMM)

A striking Herzog & de Meuron building of hanging gardens right on the bay, with strong Latin American and contemporary art and one of the best waterfront terrace bars in the city. Go for the art, stay for the sunset over Biscayne Bay.

    ~$16Brickell / Downtown
  8. A Biscayne Bay boat cruise

See the skyline, the cruise port and the celebrity mansions of Star Island from the water — the sightseeing boats leave from Bayside Marketplace downtown. Cheesy narration, unbeatable views; sunset departures are the pick.

    ~$30Brickell / Downtown
  9. South Pointe Park pier

The green tip of South Beach where the cruise ships slide past close enough to touch — a lovely grassy park, a pier, and the beach's best sunset walk. Free, calm, and a locals' spot amid the South Beach frenzy.

    FreeSouth Beach
  10. A Cuban feast & a cortadito

Ropa vieja, a Cuban sandwich, tostones and a sweet cortadito coffee — the food that defines Miami, best at a bustling Little Havana ventanita or a classic like Versailles. Cheap, generous and the real taste of the city.

    $Little Havana
  11. A South Beach club night

Miami helped write the rules of nightlife — the superclubs (LIV, and the beach lounges) are a scene of bottle service and world-class DJs. Pricey and a dress-up; go once for the spectacle, or find a rooftop for the same skyline cheaper.

    Cover $$$South Beach
  12. Brickell rooftops

Downtown's glass-tower district has the city's best rooftop and skyline bars, plus the Brickell City Centre and a buzzy after-work crowd. Slicker and less touristy than South Beach for a cocktail with a view.

    $$Brickell / Downtown
  13. Wynwood breweries & bars

The district behind the murals is a night out in itself — craft breweries, taco joints, street-art bars and a local, unpretentious crowd. The city's coolest, best-value evening; bar-hop on foot.

    $$Wynwood
  14. Live salsa at Ball & Chain

The restored 1930s Little Havana club where Cuban bands play and everyone dances, from grandmothers to first-timers. Mojitos, a pineapple stage, and the warmest night out in Miami — go, and don't be shy on the floor.

    $Little Havana
  15. Coconut Grove waterfront

Miami's oldest neighbourhood — leafy, laid-back, with a marina, waterfront parks and easygoing cafés and shops around CocoWalk. Rent a paddleboard, watch the sailboats, and see the calm, green side of the city.

Worth knowing: Miami and Miami Beach are two cities across a bay — South Beach is on the island, the rest (Wynwood, Little Havana, Brickell) on the mainland. You'll want to hop between them by car or rideshare; it's spread out and public transport is thin.

Miami is the United States at its most tropical and least buttoned-up — a sun-blasted, Latin-inflected beach city where Art Deco pastels line the sand, Cuban coffee fuels the day and the nightlife runs till dawn. Half the city speaks Spanish; the food, music and energy are as Caribbean and South American as they are American. Beyond the neon of South Beach there's world-class street art in Wynwood, cortaditos and dominoes in Little Havana, and the mangroves and turquoise flats of Biscayne Bay. Glamorous, hedonistic and gloriously humid — a slice of Latin America with a US zip code.
