The iconic island strip — pastel Art Deco hotels, the wide white sand, Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road, and the clubs that made Miami famous. Glamorous, pricey and non-stop, right on the beach; the classic (if touristy) base for sun, sea and a big night out.

- 1.Ocean Drive & the beach — The postcard Miami — a strip of neon-lit Art Deco hotels facing the wide white sand, palms and rollerbladers. Touristy and loud, but walking it once (and swimming off South Beach) is non-negotiable. Best in the early morning light or after dark.
- 2.The Art Deco District — The world's largest collection of 1930s Art Deco — hundreds of pastel, porthole-windowed buildings around South Beach. Do the free self-guided walk or a guided tour; it's why the whole island is protected, and gorgeous in the low sun.
- 6.Stone crab at Joe's — Miami's signature feast — sweet stone-crab claws with mustard sauce, an institution since 1913 at Joe's on South Beach. In season (October–May) it's worth the wait and the price; out of season, any seafood spot does the local catch.
- 9.South Pointe Park pier — The green tip of South Beach where the cruise ships slide past close enough to touch — a lovely grassy park, a pier, and the beach's best sunset walk. Free, calm, and a locals' spot amid the South Beach frenzy.
- 11.A South Beach club night — Miami helped write the rules of nightlife — the superclubs (LIV, and the beach lounges) are a scene of bottle service and world-class DJs. Pricey and a dress-up; go once for the spectacle, or find a rooftop for the same skyline cheaper.
