Basque bar-hopping is a ritual — one pintxo and a small txakoli or zurito per bar, then move on, especially around Plaza Nueva and the Seven Streets. Sunday morning brings a market to Plaza Nueva; the gilda (olive, anchovy, pepper) is the classic first bite.

A grand old wine warehouse reinvented by Philippe Starck into a culture centre — its atrium held up by 43 wildly different columns, with a glass-bottomed rooftop pool overhead. A striking, free wander in the heart of the shopping district.
The Gothic basilica of Bilbao's patron, the Virgin of Begoña, perched above the old town and reached by an old lift or a stepped climb. Quiet and grand, with a fine view down over the Casco Viejo.
The city's elegant central park behind the Fine Arts museum — duck ponds, a pergola, fountains and shady paths, full of locals at the weekend. A lovely green pause between museums and the river.
The reclaimed riverbanks are now a continuous promenade of bridges, sculpture and modern architecture linking the Guggenheim to the old town. Walk or cycle it to see how the city remade itself; best in the evening light.
The world's oldest transporter bridge, a UNESCO wonder of iron from 1893 that ferries cars and people across the river mouth in a hanging gondola. Ride it, or walk the vertigo-inducing high walkway for a great estuary view.
Bilbao's Gothic cathedral at the heart of the Seven Streets, a stop on the coastal Camino de Santiago, with a pretty cloister and portico. A quiet, central anchor amid the pintxos bustle.
At the estuary mouth, Getxo strings together sandy Ereaga and Arrigunaga beaches, a marina and a grand cliff-top promenade of old mansions. An easy sea-air escape on the metro; swim, stroll and eat grilled fish.

Worth knowing: The centre is compact and linked by a slick metro, tram and the Artxanda funicular; you won't need a car. The beaches and the famous Gaztelugatxe coast are a short metro or bus ride out to Getxo and beyond.

Good time to goBilbao is the great comeback story of Spanish cities — a gritty Basque industrial port that reinvented itself around Frank Gehry's shimmering titanium Guggenheim and became a byword for urban renewal. The muddy Nervión is now lined with striking bridges, riverside walks and world-class architecture, while behind it the medieval Casco Viejo hums with pintxos bars, a great covered market and Sunday crowds. Wrapped in steep green hills and a short hop from Basque surf beaches and dramatic coastline, it's proud, walkable and food-obsessed — a city that rewards a couple of unhurried days of museums by day and bar-crawling by night.
